9.1 Organisms and The Surroundings Where They Live

9.2 Habitat and Adaptation

We have learnt about habitat, but what is adaptation? Depending on the environment, plants and animals keep changing in terms of habits and features. This helps them to live in that particular habitat. This is known as adaptation. If you want to see this on your own, consider carrying a notebook and pencil when you go on a trip with your family. You will notice, depending on the region, and nature, the plants, animals and even the physical state of humans change.

9.3 A Journey Through Different Habitats

Desserts – Due to scarcity of water, leaves of desert plants shrink to spines, and this causes reduced water loss through transpiration. Rats and snakes live in burrows to escape the intense heat and only come out after the sunsets.

Mountains – Trees are cone-shaped, and most of the leaves have thorns on them to reduce the space for rainwater and snow accumulation. Most animals have thick fur to protect themselves from the intense cold.

Grasslands – Plants and trees in these areas are lush green during the rainy season, however, turn pale brown during the dry season. Animals live here according to the changing seasons, and thus, the regions are also known as one of the most productive landscapes.

Aquatic/Marine Habitats – Living organisms that make oceans and seas, their home have streamlined gills and bodies. Here, they are adapted to live peacefully in salty water.
