There are many shapes and sizes of objects that we see around us all the time. Some are long and some are round. There are many other shapes and sizes but for now we will discuss long and round only.
Example: A cricket bat is long and a ball is round.
Let us list out some more objects that are long and round in our surroundings.
| Long | Round |
| Tree | Tyre |
| Trousers | Clock |
| Ruler | Coin |
| Pencil | Ball |
| Water bottle | Wheel |
Certain shapes can roll and slide. Shapes that roll, are circular and shapes that cannot roll have slides.
Example:
A Wheel rolls
A Ball rolls
Book Slides
Paper slides
Wheels and balls can roll because they are circular in shape whereas books and papers are slide because they are not circular in shape. They are flat in shape. They are long in shape and they have edges.
You can play a game with your friends. You can tie your eyes with a piece of cloth turn by turn and guess the shapes of the objects around you.
The Physical Properties of Long Things and Round Things
- Long things are flat.
- Long things have corners.
- Long things have edges.
- Long things have faces.
- Round things have no corner.
- Round things are circular.
- Round things have no edges
- Round things have only one face.
Examples: A matchbox has sharp edges. It cannot roll. It can only slide. A plate is flat and can roll.
Some objects can both roll and slide.
Example: CD, bottle cap, buttons, pencils, etc. These objects can both roll and slide because these objects have both circular faces as well as flat faces.
Stacking
Stacking means to organize objects on top of one another. It is an orderly pile of objects.
Some objects can be stacked easily because they have a smooth surface. For example: coins, whereas rounded objects cannot be stacked on one another. If the objects don’t have a smooth surface they cannot be stacked. For example: apple.
You can look around and see which objects are long or round and which can be stacked or cannot be stacked.
