NCERT EVS for Class 4 Chapter 21 – Food and Fun talks about two things. The first part deals with life in a boarding school and the second part talks about gurdwaras in the form of a story. Divya and Swastika came home from boarding schools for their vacation. They have come to their friend’s house, Gurnoor. They all want to go to Gurudwara. When Gurnoor asked them about life in boarding school, Divya said that they are very happy to be there because all children do things together.

Have you ever heard of boarding schools? Boarding schools are very different from the normal day schools that you go to.  In boarding schools, children live inside the school campus. They live in dormitories or resident houses. Boarding schools are also called residential schools. Students do everything together. It is like home. Children have to stay away from their families but they can meet them once a week. When parents’ jobs are transferable jobs then they send their children to boarding schools so that they don’t have to change schools often. Sometimes parents send their children to school because there may not be any good school in their town. Children do miss their parents at times but all children live together, eat together and do all activities together. It becomes fun there. Sometimes when parents send food for their child, everyone shares the food and finishes it within a few minutes. Boarding schools have more extra-curricular activities than normal day school. The teachers become the second mothers to the students and they actually live with them on the campus. They always try to keep the children engaged in some activities. Children become more independent in boarding schools because they keep learning to do new things on their own. A sense of punctuality and discipline is inculcated in children. That makes them more responsible.

The next part of NCERT EVS Class 4 Chapter 21 – Food and Fun talks about gurdwaras. Divya, Swastika, and Gurnoor went to the gurdwara. Do you know about gurdwaras? Gurdwara is a place of worship for Sikhs. In gurdwara, they serve food to thousands of people every day who come to visit. This is called langar. The rule of the gurdwara is whoever comes to visit and if they are in need of food then they can have food without any money. It is a Sikh tradition. Food is cooked in huge vessels and people volunteer there to prepare food for the needy. They do all activities together from cutting and chopping vegetables to cooking and serving people. Everyone volunteers to do some work for langar. Some people arrange for the raw materials, some give money, some make Prasad, and some do other work like serving water and food.

The children went to the big kitchen of the gurdwara. They saw food being prepared in huge vessels. They too wanted to help in something or the other. Divya applied ghee on the chapatis that came out from the hot tawas. It is really fun doing activities together.

Conclusion

From this lesson, we learned that when we do activities together, we learn a lot of new things from each other. These are non-academic skills that make children more responsible and disciplined, which are valuable when they have to face the world outside.
